Sample Thesis Statement

The society of The Giver values unity. In order to promote this value, the society creates rules that force citizens to live in organized family units, avoid pointing out differences between people, and have the same rituals every night and every morning.           Although this creates a society with little freedom of choice, the enforcement of these rules makes a utopia, because people live with order and peace.

Sample body paragraph

In the society of The Giver, rules are passed that force citizens to act the same in order to keep the society unified.  Families are chosen and organized by the Committee of Elders, who lead the community. The Committee chooses who will marry. Couples are judged by how well they cooperate together. Then, if the match is successful, couples are allowed to apply for up to two children.  This means that love in the way we understand it does not exist. Individuals do not desire each other and act on that desire. Instead, reason is used to create families. The result is a system that works. Families get along. “Jonas's mother, for example, had higher intelligence than his father; but his father had a calmer disposition. They balanced each other.” (62)  This shows that, unlike in our system, where people often choose husbands or wives who are too much like themselves or who, in the end, they cannnot tolerate, in Jonas's community, where observations and reasons are used to make the matches, the result is a balance. Only if the couple is successful for five years are they allowed to apply for children. That is a much better system than allowing any couple that desires each other to have children, because, in the end, too many of those couples end in disaster and the children suffer. In The Giver, the rules ensure that families remain unified and that children are well cared for.
