- How do those values and rules define what it means to be human?
- How do those values and rules shape the political element of society and create a utopia or dystopia?
- Give you an opportunity to demonstrate your ability to organize your writing into an essay.
- Give me a chance to read more of your writing so that we can establish writing goals.
The Assignment
Choose a value that you
believe the society in The Giver promotes. Explore rules that the society
enforces in order to force this value in the community. Then, discuss whether
this value and the rules the community makes create a utopia or a dystopia.
This weekend you will begin an outline for the essay.
You will write the essay next week. Please follow each step below.
- Write your thesis statement.
Here is a sample format for a thesis statement for this
essay:
The society in The Giver values __________________________.
In order to promote this value, the society creates rules that force citizens
to (here, briefly describe the rules you will discuss). Although these rules do
create a society that is __________________________, the enforcement of the
rules makes this a dystopia, because ______________________________________.
Here is an example:
The society of The
Giver values unity. In order to promote this value, the society creates rules
that force citizens to live in organized family units, avoid pointing out
differences between people, and have the same rituals every night and every
morning. Although these rules do create a society that is unified, the
enforcement of the rules makes this a dystopia, because people have lost too
much of their privacy and freedom.
What is your thesis statement? Type it on your paper and
label it.
- Write your topic sentence for you first body paragraph. In this paragraph you will describe the rules the society has passed and how they promote the value you have chosen to discuss.
Here is an example:
In the society of the
Giver, rules are passed that force citizens to act the same in order to keep
the society unified.
- Notice that this topic sentence directly relates to my thesis about unity.
- Notice that this topic sentence tells you what the paragraph will be about – the rules the society has passed that create unity.
- Now, complete this body paragraph. In the paragraph, talk about three rules and briefly explain how each rule creates the value you are discussing.
