Roman Republic

(balance of power)

(e pluribus unum)

(Senate, executive, assembly)

SPQR: senitus populous que romanus

The senate and the people are one

The Roman Republic (529-27BCE) was a form of government in which the power was balanced between the Senate, executive and assembly.  No group could take power because the executive was selected by citizens and served as the judges but the assembly elected the consul and could reject laws that the senate made, and they were made up of all adult male landowners so each group balanced the power of another group. The legacy is that because people had a role in government they felt more civic pride (SPQR) and this idea of balance of power is used by Western governments today.

Ancient Athenian Democracy

(why Greece – autonomy, hoplite phalanx, individual excellence - arete, philosophy and rhetoric)

(direct democracy)

(legacy in west – use of democracy but it is representative)

A form of democracy developed in Ancient Athens around 478BCE in which all adult male citizens had the right to vote and speak out in public debate. In Ancient Athens, the society had developed a love of wisdom and autonomy and arete that meant the society valued self-rule and people wanted to protect individual rights. In addition the hoplite phalanx contributed to a desire for democracy because the soldiers fought together at the same level so the idea of equal rights formed. The development of democracy in Ancient Athens leads to democracy in Western nations today.
